About Clontarf and Scots Presbyterian Church

Clontarf and Scots Presbyterian Church was built between 1888 and 1890 in the Gothic Revival style. It has a cruciform plan with a four-bay nave, built of squared granite under a pitched artificial slate roof. Notable features include a four-stage tower, stained-glass windows, an open timber roof and crenellated parapets.

History

The church was designed by architect Thomas Drew, who was apparently a rector and specialized in ecclesiastical architecture. Construction began in 1888 following a union of the Ormond Quay and Scots Church with the Clontarf congregation, which had been established by a mission from the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland in 1861. The building shares its architectural idiom with the adjacent Howth Road Mixed National School.
