About St Lachtain’s, Freshford
St Lachtain’s, Freshford dates from 1844 and is built in the Gothic Revival style. The church is built of ashlar limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows, a bellcote and an internal gallery.
History
St Lachtain’s was sponsored by the Eyre family of Uppercourt House for Bishop William Kinsella and Reverend William Hart. The church was built to designs prepared by William Deane Butler, who served as resident architect for the Diocese of Ossory. It stands on the site of an earlier Catholic chapel that pre-dates 1840, continuing a long-standing ecclesiastical presence in the grounds.
