About St. John The Baptist
St. John The Baptist was built between 1835 and 1838. It has a five-bay nave and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and crenellated parapets.
History
Designed by Patrick Byrne in 1835, the church was built on land granted by J.E.V. Vernon to Father James Callanan, who became parish priest of Clontarf after Catholic Emancipation in 1829. Construction was supported by a £1000 bequest from M. Carey. The building was opened in 1838 and dedicated in 1842, replacing an older local chapel. Later extensions include an apse added in 1893 by George Ashlin and porches added in 1910 by Ashlin & Coleman.
