About Clontarf St John The Baptist
Clontarf St John The Baptist was built between 1864 and 1866. It has a cruciform plan, built of rubble granite under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a bell tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and window tracery. The vestry was added in 1897.
History
Designed by Welland & Gillespie and built by Waldron Brothers, the Church of Ireland church was consecrated on 14 May 1866. The site was provided by the Vernon family of Clontarf Castle, who also commissioned a twelve-light stained glass window depicting the apostles from Michael O'Connor of London. The chancel was remodelled by Fuller in 1899, and a later window in the porch commemorates soldiers from the parish.
