About Shrule St Catherine (Ballymahon)
Shrule St Catherine (Ballymahon) was built between 1800 and 1825. It has a cruciform plan with a three-bay nave, built of rubble limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a four-stage tower with a spire, crenellated parapets, pinnacles and window tracery.
History
The church was rebuilt in 1824 to designs by Dublin architect Samuel Mullen, incorporating an earlier nave dating from c. 1800. The work was funded by a grant of £1140 from the Board of First Fruits. It is likely that the tower and spire were added during these alterations. Further repairs and alterations were effected in 1890. The site may have hosted an earlier edifice, as the graveyard contains a gravestone dated 1774.
