Our Lady of Consolation

History

The parish of Donnycarney was constituted in 1952 from the parish of Marino. It is situated about five kilometres from the city centre and near the junction of the Malahide Road and Collins Avenue.

Activities

The parish describes its main church choir as a long established feature. It is a mixed chamber choir singing in parts and in unison, with a repertoire running from plainchant to hymns in common use in the Irish church and settings by composers including Schubert, Bach and Mendelssohn. The choir keeps a small music library that includes some rare books.

An Irish language choir was founded in the 1990s by the then choir director and specialises in Irish language church music. When the Irish language Mass in the church became bilingual, it was decided that the singing would remain in Irish. Its repertoire includes compositions in Irish by Sean O Riada, plainchant in Irish, old hymns known as amhrain bheannaithe, old poems set to traditional airs, translations of English language hymns and contemporary Irish language compositions. The choir took part in the Donnycarney Traditional Music Festival in 2012 and 2013 and performed at the Casino in Marino in 2013, and it has been broadcast live on RTE Raidio na Gaeltachta. The organist and choir director from 2011 to 2015 translated and arranged a number of Mass settings for the choir, including Schubert's Deutsche Masse, which was performed live on Raidio na Gaeltachta.
