About Clonbroney (Ballinalea)
Clonbroney (Ballinalea) was built in 1825 in the Gothic Revival style. It has a cruciform plan with a three-bay nave, built of squared limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower, stained-glass windows, crenellated parapets and pinnacles. The church stands in its own graveyard.
History
Designed by John Hargrave, the church was built in 1825 using a gift of £1100 and a loan of £300 from the Board of First Fruits. It was enlarged in 1830 with a £300 loan and a £100 donation from the Countess Dowager of Rosse. Local sources suggest William Farrell may have designed the enlargement. A vestry was added c. 1860. The site possibly incorporates an earlier church, indicated by a grave marker dated 1736.
