About Clonakilty Methodist Church

Clonakilty Methodist Church dates from 1860. The church is built of squared limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows, pinnacles and window tracery. It was designed by James Fitzpatrick.

The building

Designed by James Fitzpatrick, this Gothic Revival church was built on the site of an earlier place of worship. It features a three-bay double-height main block with an attached two-bay former school. The structure is constructed of dressed snecked limestone with ashlar pinnacles and corner-sited buttresses. Pointed arch openings are framed by chamfered limestone block-and-start surrounds and voussoirs. The main block contains tripartite windows with reticulated tracery and quarry-glazed glass, while the school block has bipartite windows. A timber-framed stained glass oculus is set into the rear elevation. The complex is enclosed by a rendered wall with tooled limestone copings and cast-iron railings.
