About Church of the Immaculate Conception, Rathcormac
Church of the Immaculate Conception, Rathcormac dates from 1818. It has a cruciform plan, built of rubble sandstone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower with a spire, stained glass including a rose window, an internal gallery and a marble altar.
The building
The doorways are shouldered flat arches set within pointed recesses, with rendered surrounds, hood mouldings and timber-battened double doors fitted with ornate cast-iron hinges. Inside, a carved hammer-beam roof spans the church and pointed arcades rest on polished red-chert Doric columns with carved limestone capitals.
