About St. Peter
St. Peter was built around 1857 in the Gothic Revival style. It has a cruciform plan with a seven-bay nave, built of squared limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage bell tower, stained glass including a rose window, a marble altar and buttressed walls.
History
Designed by Weightman, Hadfield and Goldie, the church replaced a pre-Emancipation chapel. It was extended and remodelled c.1903-11 by George Coppinger Ashlin, who added a 60m high tower and spire. Initially a chapel of ease to St Paul's, Arran Quay, it passed to the Vincentian Order in the 1830s.
