About St. Mary's Church, Meanus
St. Mary's Church, Meanus was built between 1840 and 1850. It has a three-bay nave, built of squared limestone under a pitched artificial slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and a marble altar.
The building
This freestanding Roman Catholic church was constructed between 1845-46 with snecked limestone walls, tooled quoins, and a cut limestone stringcourse on the west entrance tower. Pointed arch openings feature carved hoodmouldings, while the east elevation displays intersecting tracery and carved stops depicting faces. The interior holds a scissor-brace timber roof, a rear timber gallery, and a marble reredos, with square-profile limestone gate piers flanking wrought-iron gates at a T-junction.
