About St Brendan, Muckalee

St Brendan, Muckalee was built in 1844. It has a simple single-cell form and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and pinnacles.

The building

This detached five-bay double-height Catholic church was constructed in 1844 and stands set back from the road within its own grounds. The west elevation features pointed-arch recesses that were possibly originally window openings, alongside a quatrefoil recess in the gable and an attached two-bay presbytery. Inside, the full-height space contains Gothic-style timber panelled confessional boxes, a stepped gallery on cast-iron pillars, and a reredos with clustered colonettes and statuary.
