About Church of John the Baptist, Johnswell
Church of John the Baptist, Johnswell was built in 1817. It has a cruciform plan with a two-bay nave and rendered walls. Notable features include stained-glass windows, a marble altar and lancet windows.
History
The church was erected under the aegis of Reverend James Henneberry (1772-1834). Its construction coincided with the gradual dismantling of the Penal Laws in anticipation of the Roman Catholic Relief Act of 1829. The interior was later reordered in accordance with liturgical reforms sanctioned by the Second Ecumenical Council of the Vatican (1962-5).
