About Ross St Fachtna (Rosscarbery)
Ross St Fachtna (Rosscarbery) was built around 1585. It has a cruciform plan with a four-bay nave and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a two-stage bell tower, stained-glass windows, an open timber roof and pinnacles. The spire was added in 1806.
History
Christians have apparently worshiped on this site for over 1400 years, with Saint Fachtna arriving c.590 AD. A church has stood here since at least the tenth century. The current structure was built c.1585, though the western portion was destroyed in 1641 and rebuilt by 1691. The north transept was added c.1815 and the south transept c.1835. Extensive renovation occurred c.1875, followed by restoration from 2002 to 2006.
