About Church of the Sacred Heart
Church of the Sacred Heart was built between 1941 and 1945. It has a cruciform plan with a nine-bay nave, built of squared granite under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a five-stage tower, an internal gallery and buttressed walls. It was designed by Ralph Byrne.
History
The foundation stone was laid in July 1942. The project had an estimated cost of £60,000 and Murphy Brothers were the main contractors. The church replaced an earlier hall-type church dating from 1826, which was demolished after the new church opened.
