About Church of St. Peter, Drogheda
Church of St. Peter, Drogheda was built in 1791. It has a cruciform plan, built of ashlar limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a six-stage tower with an octagonal spire, stained glass including a rose window, an internal gallery and a marble altar. It was designed by Francis Johnson.
History
The church was extensively rebuilt in 1864 and 1884, with crossing transepts and a sanctuary added in 1891, while modifications by J. J. McCarthy, J. O'Neill and W. H. Byrne completely mask the original structure. A west chapel dedicated to Saint Oliver Plunkett houses a reliquary containing his head, and the site includes a bust of the saint and a rubble stone grotto.
