About Ballycommon Church
Ballycommon Church was built in 1841. It has a simple single-cell form and rendered walls. Notable features include an internal gallery and an organ.
The building
This Roman Catholic church in Co. Offaly is dedicated to Saints Francis of Assisi and Bridget. The three-bay gable-fronted structure includes a semi-circular apse, side chapels and a pitched roof with a stone cross finial. A plaque above the entrance reads 'Dom. Ecclesia SS Francisi de Assisi et Brigidae aedificata 1841 AD.' The site contains a cast-iron bell manufactured by Byrne of Dublin and lies on the Kilbeggan branch of the Grand Canal, where it may have provided mass for travellers.
