History

The Discalced Carmelites came to Dublin in 1625 under Fr Paul Browne. The community's own history records that they first said Mass in the front room of Browne's mother's house on Cook Street. Four years later the civil authorities closed all chapels in the city and the order moved to another part of Dublin.

The friars made their way gradually from the Liberties towards Clarendon Street, and took possession of their own church and monastery there in 1797.

Notable people

The community's history records that the friars allowed Daniel O'Connell to hold political meetings in the chapel between 1813 and 1829, during the campaign for Catholic emancipation. O'Connell chose one of the friars, Fr John Francis Lestrange, as his confessor. Lestrange also acted as secretary of O'Connell's Catholic Association.
