About St Ann's Church
St Ann's Church has stood on Dawson Street since 1720. Its Romanesque façade, added in 1868, is a Dublin landmark. The church has a bread shelf dating from 1723, continuing the founder's tradition of distributing bread to the poor.
History
St Ann's parish was established by an Act of Parliament in 1707, covering a defined area of land between Grafton Street and Merrion Street. The church building did not follow immediately, and much of it had been completed by January 1721.
The full name of the parish is St Ann's and St Mark's with St Stephen's. St Mark's church was closed by the Church of Ireland in 1971. A history of the church, St Ann's, Dawson Street: The Church in the Heart of the City, was published in 2026.
The building
The church stands at the junction of Dawson Street and Ann Street South. The west end facade facing onto Dawson Street was rebuilt in 1868. The parish describes the building as having Romanesque revival elements and a neo-Byzantine interior, with stained glass windows.
