About St. Mary's Youghal
St. Mary's Youghal was built in 1796. The church is built of sandstone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and pinnacles.
History
St Mary's was built in 1796 by subscription, aided by a £700 donation from Dr William Coppinger, Bishop of Cloyne and Ross. The exterior was transformed in Gothic style in 1865 by local architect Edward Fitzgerald, though the tower spire was dismantled in 1919 on health and safety grounds. The Telford organ was first played for High Mass celebrated by Bishop Keane on 23 May 1858.
