About St. Ita's Church, Gortroe
St. Ita's Church, Gortroe dates from 1909. It has a five-bay nave and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows, a bellcote and an internal gallery.
The building
St Ita's Church is a freestanding gable-fronted Roman Catholic church dated 1909, constructed of early concrete imitative of stone. It has a lower gabled chancel to the north, a two-bay sacristy to the west, rendered walls with decorative strap pointing, quoins and buttresses, and a pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge crestings and a carved limestone bellcote with a cross finial. Pointed arch openings occur throughout, including triple lancet windows. Interior features include a glazed timber screen porch, carved timber gallery, exposed roof timbers and a carved marble altar. A grotto stands to the east, and boundary walls have metal railings with a trefoil motif.
