About St. Mary's Catholic Church, Newmarket
St. Mary's Catholic Church, Newmarket dates from 1840. It has a cruciform plan and pebbledashed walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained glass including a rose window, a bellcote and a marble altar.
The building
St Mary's Catholic Church occupies an elevated corner site and comprises a flat-roof porch extension, a pitched roof extension to the west, and a flat-roof sacristy extension to the east. The building displays pointed arch windows with Y-tracery, Tudor arch doorways with timber battened doors, and a plaque on the south elevation, while the interior contains timber galleries on square-plan columns and carved marble altar rails with ogee-headed detailing. Cut limestone boundary walls with wrought-iron railings enclose the site, which also includes a graveyard.
