About St Mary’s Cathedral, Kilkenny
St Mary’s Cathedral, Kilkenny was built between 1843 and 1857 in the Early English Gothic style. It has a cruciform plan with a five-bay nave, built of ashlar limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a tower, stained glass including a rose window, mosaic work and crenellated parapets.
The building
The building was designed by William Deane Butler, possibly reworking an 1836 submission by John Shaw, and constructed for Bishops William Kinsella and Edward Walsh. The interior was completed in 1865 by Earley and Powell, featuring a pointed-arch arcade, open work roof construction, a trompe l'oeil ceiling, and mosaic-tiled walls and floors. Situated on James's Street and James's Green, the structure incorporates work by artists including Nathaniel Westlake and James Pearse.
