About Kilkenny St John

Kilkenny St John was built between 1817 and 1818. It has a simple single-cell form, built of rubble limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower, an internal gallery, crenellated parapets and pinnacles.

History

Designed by William Robertson, the church repurposes the ruined shell of the Lady Chapel (1290) of the Augustinian Priory of Saint John the Evangelist. It was apparently founded by William Marshall. The building is attributed to Robertson and incorporates elements from the earlier priory structure.
