About Church of St John the Evangelist, Kilkenny
Church of St John the Evangelist, Kilkenny was built between 1903 and 1906 in the Gothic Revival style. It has a four-bay nave, built of limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower, stained-glass windows, a bellcote and mosaic work.
History
Built as the O'Loughlin Memorial Church by the O'Loughlin family of Sandfords Court on a site donated by James Butler (1844-1919), third Marquess of Ormonde, designs were prepared by William Hague (c.1840-99) and executed under the supervision of William Henry Byrne (1866-1917) between 1903-6/8. An additional stage and spire projected by Byrne in association with William Hogan was never executed, and the interior apparently escaped alterations frequently undertaken post-Second Vatican Council.
