About St. John the Baptist (Castlemahon Catholic Church)
St. John the Baptist (Castlemahon Catholic Church) was built between 1960 and 1965. It has a seven-bay nave and rendered walls. Notable features include a three-stage bell tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and mosaic work.
History
Designed by architect Patrick Joseph Sheahan, the church was built on lands donated by Michael Raleigh at a cost of £26,000. The foundation stone was laid by Bishop Murphy. Sheahan, who received the title Chevalier of the Order of Saint Sylvester from Pope Pius XII in 1957, employed straight geometric lines rather than round arches in this modern design.
