About St Francis Church

St Francis Church was built around 1414. The church is built of rubble limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows, a bellcote and window tracery. The church stands in its own graveyard.

History

Originally a Franciscan friary, papal permission for the site was granted by Pope John XII in 1414, probably at the request of the O'Maddens. The Franciscans remained after the Dissolution of the Monasteries under O'Madden protection, with the last friar dying in 1852. The building was reroofed c.1855 for use as a parish church.
