About St. Bartholomew’s, Knocktemple
St. Bartholomew’s, Knocktemple was built in 1847. It has a single-cell plan with a five-bay nave and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a bell tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and crenellated parapets.
History
St Bartholomew’s was built in 1847 during the Great Famine to replace an earlier T-plan church. It was renovated and reroofed in 1959, a process that may have removed some original Gothic-style ashlar limestone details. The church forms an ensemble with the nearby graveyard and national school.
