About Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart was built in 1883 in the Gothic Revival style. The church is built of limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower with a spire, stained-glass windows, pinnacles and buttressed walls. It was designed by George Ashlin.
The building
The church has eight-bay side elevations to the nave with side aisles, projecting gabled porches, two-bay transepts, a half-octagonal apse, a sacristy to the southeast, and a side chapel to the northeast. The tower includes sculpted pinnacles, gargoyles, and an ashlar limestone spire, while the roof has terracotta ridge cresting. The interior contains colonnades of marble piers with vegetal capitals, sculpted heads to hood stops, and paintings to spandrels.
