About Sacred Heart Church, Monkstown
Sacred Heart Church, Monkstown was completed in 1872 in the Gothic Revival style. It has a cruciform plan with a four-bay nave, built of squared sandstone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a four-stage bell tower, stained glass including a rose window, an internal gallery and a marble altar.
History
In 1862 Canon William O'Connor leased the Fairy Hill site and commissioned E. W. Pugin and George Ashlin. Fr Henry Neville oversaw construction and fundraising; the estimated £3,000 cost rose to £5,000, leaving planned decorative work unfinished. The spire was completed in the late 1870s.
