Sacred Heart Church, Killoscully

The building

This freestanding gable-fronted Catholic church features a four-bay nave, single-bay chancel, and a two-bay transept to the northeast. The structure combines exposed roughly dressed snecked sandstone masonry on the west elevation with roughcast rendered walls elsewhere. Architectural details include ashlar limestone dressings, quoins, and buttresses at the west end of the nave. Lancet windows with block-and-start surrounds appear on the gable front, while a quatrefoil rose window with stained glass is set in a pointed panel. The building has pitched slate roofs and an ashlar limestone bellcote. Porches feature pointed and Tudor-arch openings with timber battened double-leaf doors. Inside, an open timber scissors truss roof supports the space, which also contains a decorative plaster backdrop to the altar and a carved limestone block with a human figure in high relief. A cemetery lies to the west, accessed via rendered piers with a cast-iron gate.
