About Church of Our Lady of the Wayside, Birdhill
Church of Our Lady of the Wayside, Birdhill was built around 1890. The church is built of squared sandstone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a bell tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and an open timber roof.
The building
The freestanding gable-fronted structure features four-bay side elevations to the nave, a polygonal apse, and a sacristy to the northeast with a recent extension. Coursed snecked sandstone walls are detailed with cut limestone quoins and chamfered pointed arch block-and-start surrounds. The interior contains an exposed arch-braced queen-post truss roof and a carved timber gallery at the entrance end.
