About Rathcline (Lanesborough)
Rathcline (Lanesborough) was built between 1855 and 1865. It has a three-bay nave, built of squared limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a bell tower, a bellcote and lancet windows. It was designed by Joseph Welland.
History
The church stands on the site of earlier structures, including an abbey apparently converted into a church c. 1678 by George Lane, first Viscount Lanesborough. The present building was dedicated on 23 April 1862. It retains carved fragments from earlier churches, such as a plaque bearing the coat of arms of the first Viscount Lanesborough. The bell, cast by Sheridan’s in Dublin, was presented by Col. Henry White M.P. in 1859.
