About Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Cashelard
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Cashelard was built around 1898. The church has rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows and window tracery.
History
The current structure replaced an earlier church built in 1832 by Fr. Cummins on land donated by Colonel Connolly. That predecessor was apparently a small building with a slate roof and clay floor. Earlier Catholic services during Penal times were apparently held at a mass rock in the adjacent field. The present church was described as exquisite by Cannon Maguire upon its opening in 1898.
