About Holy Family
Holy Family was built in 1876. It has a cruciform plan, built of squared limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and a marble altar. It was designed by John Stirling Butler.
History
The site was purchased in 1871, with construction beginning in 1874 to designs by John Stirling Butler. The church was enlarged in 1902 by Doolin, Butler and Donnelly to accommodate population growth. A mortuary chapel was added in 1938, and a gate commemorating the 1932 Eucharistic Congress was erected. It served as the official Catholic church of the Royal Irish Constabulary until Independence.
