About Church of the Sacred Heart, Clare Island
Church of the Sacred Heart, Clare Island was built in 1862. It has a simple single-cell form and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows and lancet windows.
Notable features
The design is attributed to John Joseph Lyons. The interior contains a wall monument to Reverend James B. Davis, who died in 1864. A memorial window supplied in 1953 by the Harry Clarke Stained Glass Studios of Dublin is also present. The church stands in grounds shared with Saint Brigid's Abbey, which was founded in 1224 and rebuilt in 1460.
