About Church of the Assumption, Sandpit
Church of the Assumption, Sandpit dates from 1846. It has a single-cell plan with a six-bay nave and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and crenellated parapets.
The building
The freestanding Roman Catholic church has a single-bay entrance tower to the east and a single-bay single-storey vestry to the west, with diagonal stepped buttresses at the corners and tall four-centred window openings in the nave. The interior features slender clustered shafts with leafy stylised capitals supporting pointed keel-like vaults over a broad nave and narrow aisles, where plaster vaults are painted blue and white with transverse ribs and rectangular panelling. A timber pinnacled reredos stands against the altar wall, and one original painted Y-tracery timber window remains in the north nave.
