About Askeaton St Mary
Askeaton St Mary was built in 1829. It has a single-cell plan with a three-bay nave, built of squared limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a bell tower, stained-glass windows, a bellcote and pinnacles.
History
The site retains the belfry of the Knights Templar Tower and is also the burial place of the poet Aubrey de Vere, who was born at Curragh Chase in Co. Limerick.
