About Armagh St Mark

Armagh St Mark is a Church of Ireland church in Armagh, County Armagh. It is in the Diocese of Armagh.

History

St Mark's was built in 1811 as a chapel of ease to St Patrick's Cathedral, then the parish church for Armagh, and was consecrated by Archbishop Stuart in 1814. St Mark's owes its origins to Archbishop Robinson, whose will expressed the wish that a church be built on a site between the Royal School and the military barracks. Archbishop Stuart supported the plan in order to ease the pressure on the Cathedral, which was in need of repair at that time and whose capacity was thought insufficient for the growing number of Anglicans living in Armagh.

Rebuilding and alterations in 1832 and 1866 shaped the church as it stands. In 1972 a statute of the Church of Ireland General Synod changed its status to that of parish church for Armagh.

The Crozier Hall was built in 1850 as the Church Walk School and was reconstructed to serve as a parish hall in 1932. An extension was added in 2015.

Notable features

The pulpit was installed in 1896, and the parish believes it to be the highest in the Church of Ireland. The churchyard surrounding the church contains the burial places of victims of the Armagh Rail Disaster of 1889, of war veterans and of William McCrum, inventor of football's penalty kick.
