About Ardagh St Patrick

Ardagh St Patrick was built between 1805 and 1815. It has a simple single-cell form and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower, crenellated parapets, pinnacles and window tracery.

History

The church cost £1809 to build, with the Board of First Fruits granting a loan of £900 in 1812. It served as a cathedral until the Dioceses of Ardagh and Kilmore were united in 1839. The site may be where St Mel founded a church in the fifth century, with remains of St Mel's cathedral located to the southeast.
