About St. Mary's Church, Edgeworthstown

St. Mary's Church, Edgeworthstown dates from 1872. It has a cruciform plan with a four-bay nave, built of squared limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower with an octagonal spire, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and window tracery. The spire was added in 1907.

History

The parish takes its Irish name from Meathas Troim, meaning fertile ridge, which was anglicised over the years to Mostrim. The parish records that St Beaton, also called St Barry, founded a church in the area in the sixth century, and that a well nearby is named after him.

A Franciscan friary stood at Abbeylands from the early fifteenth century, known both as Ballynasaggart and as the Friary of St John the Baptist. William Edgeworth's county map of 1814 shows the friary as a ruin. In 1619 King James I granted lands here to Francis Edgeworth, a family the parish records as featuring in its life for the next four hundred years.
