About Zion Rathgar

Zion Rathgar is a Church of Ireland church in Zion Rathgar, County Dublin. It is in the Diocese of Dublin & Glendalough.

History

The church was built with funds bequeathed by John Gold, a stockbroker who died in 1855 leaving money for a church at Rathgar. The building was vested in trustees appointed in furtherance of Gold's will. It opened for worship on All Saints' Day, 1 November 1861, and was consecrated on 21 November 1862 by Archbishop Richard Whately. Boys' and girls' schools opened in 1863.

The trustees appointed a management committee, and chapel wardens were appointed at the first General Vestry meeting on Easter Monday 1862. The first select vestry was elected in April 1871, though the management committee continued to act until 1877. A pastoral district was assigned in 1885. In 1921 the trusts were ended, the property was transferred to the Representative Church Body and the former parochial district was constituted a parish.

Electric lighting replaced gas in 1914. Oak panelling in the chancel was completed in 1930 and pew rents were abolished in 1937. A parochial hall was built in 1961 as a centenary project, the school having been used for parish activities before that. The north transept was converted into three commercial offices in 1984, and a hospitality area was created under the west gallery in 2012.

Notable features

Two of the stained glass windows are by A.E. Child of An Túr Gloine; the others are by the London firm Heaton, Butler and Bayne.

An organ built by Norman Bros. & Beard of Norwich was installed in 1897, and a hydraulic motor was installed in 1905 to supply wind for the bellows. A chapel in memory of Chancellor Parkinson Hill was consecrated in 1955. The first burial of ashes in the Garden of Remembrance took place in 1997.
