About Tallaght St Maelruain
Tallaght St Maelruain was built in 1829 in the Gothic Revival style. It has a seven-bay nave, built of rubble stone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a four-stage bell tower, crenellated parapets, pinnacles and window tracery. It was designed by John Semple.
The building
The church was restored and remodelled in 1891. It features rough-dressed coursed rubble walls and clasping corner buttresses with multiple mouldings rising to ornately carved pinnacles. The entrance porch, with a Tudor-arched double-leaf timber door, joins the west tower of the medieval church to the present building. A monolithic early Christian stone font stands in the graveyard, which is enclosed by dressed stone gate piers and cast-iron gates.
