History
Tallaght belonged to the parish of Rathfarnham for centuries. Growth in the 1960s led to its separation, and in 1969 Tallaght was incorporated into the newly created parish of Bohernabreena-Firhouse. In September 1972 Archbishop Dermot Ryan entrusted the care of the parish of St Mary's, Tallaght to the Dominicans. The parish then took in all of Central Tallaght and Kilnamanagh, the latter becoming a separate parish in 1974.
St Mary's comprised four administrative districts, and three further churches were built: St Dominic's at Millbrook in 1975, St Aengus' at Tymon North in 1975 and St Martin's at Old Bawn in 1976, each with a small residential unit for its own Dominican team. In 1985 St Mary's and its three daughter churches were divided into four parishes. St Martin's parish was returned to the care of the diocesan clergy in 1999.
