About Star of the Sea Church
Star of the Sea Church was built between 1912 and 1913. It has a simple single-cell form and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows, a bellcote and buttressed walls.
The building
The design was signed in 1913 by William Henry Byrne and Son of Dublin. The church in Co. Mayo follows a T-shaped plan with a single-bay gabled porch, and the interior contains a carpeted stepped dais, Gothic-style timber stations, and an alabaster altar detailed with Connemara marble. An exposed strutted collared timber roof rests on carved corbels, while the grounds are enclosed by rendered piers and iron double gates.
