About St. Patrick
St. Patrick was built around 1840 in the Gothic Revival style. It has a cruciform plan with a four-bay nave, built of granite under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a four-stage tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and mosaic work.
The building
Foundations were laid by 1838 and the church was dedicated on 13 Oct 1844 on land donated by the Fitzwilliam family, funded by public subscription. The original architect is unknown, though W.H. Byrne of Dublin was involved in works in 1923, and a sacristy was added c.1890. The interior features a Victorian altar of caen stone c.1865, a mosaic reredos c.1936, shallow fan vaulting with bosses and liernes, and windows from the studio of Harry Clarke.
