About St. Patrick

St. Patrick is a Roman Catholic parish church in Belfast, Co. Antrim. It is part of the Down and Connor Diocese.

The building

The church is rendered in sandstone and in the Romanesque style. The High Altar was carved in the late 1870s by James Pearse, father of Patrick Pearse. It shows scenes from the Old and New Testaments, includes statues of Our Lady and St Joseph and is adorned with many angels. Pearse also carved the statue of St Patrick as Bishop that stands over the main doors.

The Stations of the Cross are a series of 14 carvings in high relief, made in the High Victorian period, representing the journey of Jesus from his condemnation by Pontius Pilate to the Crucifixion.

Notable features

The triptych altarpiece "Madonna of the Lakes" is by Sir John Lavery and was unveiled on 20 April 1919. Lavery was born in North Belfast and baptised in St Patrick's, and although he was brought up in Scotland he wished his first religious work to be a gift to the church of his baptism. The three panels depict St Brigid, St Patrick and the Madonna, and his models were his daughter, his step-daughter and his wife.

The church treasury holds a relic of St Patrick's arm, enshrined in a medieval silver reliquary.
