About St. Nicholas of Myra

St. Nicholas of Myra was built between 1829 and 1834. It has a cruciform plan with a five-bay nave, built of ashlar granite under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a bell tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and a marble altar. It was designed by John Leeson.

History

The site holds archaeological importance as the location of a Franciscan Friary founded before 1233. This was replaced by a seventeenth-century chapel, which is shown on Roque's map of 1756. St Nicholas of Myra replaced that earlier chapel and was one of the first churches constructed in Dublin following Catholic Emancipation.
