About St. John
St. John was built between 1862 and 1874. It has a five-bay nave, built of granite under a pitched copper roof. Notable features include a three-stage bell tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and mosaic work.
History
Designed by Ashlin and Pugin, the foundation stone was laid in 1862 and the building opened for worship in 1874. The exterior and formal opening were not completed until 1895, with the spire designed by William Hague. The site holds earlier ecclesiastical history, having hosted a monastery of Crossed Friars dedicated to Saint John the Baptist in the late twelfth century.
