About St. Muredach's Cathedral, Ballina
St. Muredach's Cathedral, Ballina was built between 1827 and 1837. It has a cruciform plan with a four-bay nave. Notable features include a three-stage tower with an octagonal spire, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and mosaic work.
Notable people
The cathedral was erected under the aegis of Reverend John MacHale, Coadjutor Bishop of Killala. Its design is attributed to Dominick Madden of Galway, while the tower and spire were built after designs by James Joseph McCarthy. The interior features an altar donated by Kenelm Henry Digby, mosaic work attributed to J.J. O'Hara and Company, and side altars by James Pearse.
